A warming winter tale

Introducing our new firewood supply enterprise.

A Freezing Place

Everyone in Katanning knows how cold the winter months can get down here in Katanning and how keeping warm is essential, especially during the current health crisis.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, some of our most vulnerable families suffered in silence, with no food and very little wood. Being confined to their homes was starting to impact on the health and wellbeing of many who were already suffering from anxiety and depression.

What could BAC do to help?

The Covid-19 regional lockdowns had put a halt to the Noongar Seed Collecting Project in the region, so the Badgebup Rangers had to find other alternative work to keep them going.

A real winter warmer

An opportunity came through the Shire of Katanning and the "Winter Warmers" initiative, a Lotterywest funded project to provide essential items to vulnerable families in Katanning during the pandemic.

When the Shire of Katanning approached the Badgebup Aboriginal Corporation to help out, we hit the ground running, by purchasing a new wood saw with support from Lotterywest and we are now in the process of pursuing permits and permissions to supply wood.

The Badgebup Rangers also participated in chainsaw training course at Gnowangerup with other Noongar Rangers from Tambellup and Gnowangerup in preparation for other projects.

The BAC is now pursuing permits wth DBCA to supply wood.

This is just another example of Badgebup Aboriginal Corporation's innovative approach to enterprise and culture as Business Development Manager Julie Hayden explains.

" Everything we do on-country helps us, it is all part of the big picture. Wood cutting has an advantage too, it takes you back on country and when we deliver the load to town, we stop and have a yarn with our families and have a laugh and joke with them... it is our Noongar way."

John is already planning to put a proposition to the board for the next capital acquisition, a log splitter to enable the Rangers to split firewood with ease which makes it even easier for the elderly to carry wood inside.

Rumour has it that he is alraedy beginning to shine!!!!
