Ranger training

TRAIN and GAIN

We are pleased to announce our first on-country training course for Noongar people in the Central Great Southern Region. More than 20 people expressed an interest in participating in the course.

First aid training

A First Aid Skill Set was delivered by South Regional TAFE at the local Noongar Centre in Gnowangerup on the 11th and 12th of March and was aimed at creating greater participation in on-country training programs.

A number of people from Gnowangerup and Tambellup registered for the course, which focused on administering first aid and how to manage a range of medical emergencies including snake and spider bites, shock and medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma and seizures and much more.

A second First Aid course was delivered at the Katanning Campus on the 15th and 16th of March for participants from Katanning and Badgebup. A total of 18 people successfully completed the training. The training schedule is part of our Aboriginal Ranger Program, which was funded by the McGowan Government from 2020-2022.

Conservation and biodiversity

A Certificate II qualification in Conservation and Biodiverse Management will also be offered to locals in the coming weeks and will target Noongar women in bushfood enterprises. Units include recognising plants, extracting seed and planting, preserving and protecting plant specimens. Practical components of the training will be delivered on-campus at Katanning TAFE and on-site at Badgebup, Gnowangerup and Tambellup. Graduates from the course will transition into the casual work pool and be engaged in the growing number of Noongar land enterprises in the southwest.

The course is largely based on-Country with plenty of hand-on learning.

"This is amazing opportunity for our mob to learn about biodiverse solutions for degraded land management and how to set up enterprises to support the regenerative cycle. It will not only build our local Ranger capacity but it will also strengthen individual connection to country and culture.
