Community, healing and restoration

One of Badgebup Aboriginal Corporation's strong supporters and partner's - Katanning Landcare, has teamed up in continuing the Piesse Lake Makeover in 2019. BAC helped organise a first ever Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony on 3rd June 2019 start of the next phase of the Planting project in recognition of the importance of Piesse Lake to the local Noongar people.

Linked to the Mulka dreamtime story discussed in the Place Names Project, Piesse Lake planting meets both the environment restoration outcomes of Katanning Landcare's work and the healing of country goals of the local Aboriginal community.

We had such a wonderful time on Sunday planting the Casuarina Woodlands area of the Piesse Lake Botanic Gardens with our wonderful volunteers.

The day was extra special as it was #NAIDOC Week, and we had special plants go in to represent the local #Noongar families in our area.

We are grateful to the Badgebup Aboriginal Corporation for volunteering their time, and planting these special plants on behalf of the families who couldn't be there.

Subsequent planting weekends were supported by the Katanning community and members of the Noongar Rangers who worked alongside the community volunteers of Katanning Landcare demonstrating tremendous participation and support for this important project which is already showing great results in the restoration of important water systems. Plantings continued into August 2019 and it is hoped more people will get involved in future events to use the planting of seedlings as a way to recognise their past family members as a symbol of healing with the community and country.
